Ward Clips Smashers for Cycle
|
Paul Ward did everything he could for the Newark Bulldogs -- literally.
The 22-year-old right fielder hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Bulldogs, going for the cycle and helping them get past the San Diego Smashers, 7-3, at Newark Recreational Ballpark.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Ward reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Ward banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 3 runs batted in and 1 run scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Paul Ward tripled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Anthony Harper in the 6th, grounded out in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.
In his season totals, Ward has 15 home runs, .321 BA, .349 OBP, 67 RBIs and 84 runs scored. He has played in 108 games.
