Admirals Lose, 2-1
|
The Phoenix Firebirds did just enough to sneak past the Seattle Admirals, 2-1, at The Ship Yard. Phoenix pitcher Don Wirtz, in particular, had a standout performance. Wirtz picked up the win for Phoenix, going 6 innings. He gave up no runs on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 10-6. Alan Morris was called on to finish, recording his 16th save.
Phoenix relied on the hitting of Bobby Gore to pick up the win. The first baseman clubbed a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Firebirds on top, 2-0. For the game, Gore had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"I liked his command," said Phoenix manager Nelson Ortega. "Don was throwing strikes."
The Firebirds saw their win-loss record go to 64-71. At the same time, the Admirals fell to 95-40.
