Appalachian League Names Mendoza Best Batter Monday, August 13th, 2035 Appalachian League pitchers will attest that it was tough to get Shawn Mendoza of the Scottsdale Scorpions out last week. His all-around performance at the plate made him the league's most recent Player of the Week. The 22-year-old catcher boasted a .524 average with 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and 6 runs scored. Mendoza went 11-for-21 for the week. This year Mendoza has collected a .344 batting average to date with 43 hits in 125 at-bats, 44 RBIs, 13 home runs and scored 29 times.
