Gang Green Keep Streak Alive with Late Rally
|
The Irvine Gang Green had to overcome a good performance from Phoenix pitcher Don Wirtz to claim a 3-1 win at Firebirds Field. Wirtz went 6.1 innings and allowed no runs. Irvine reliever Tyson Patton picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Steve Caldwell was saddled with the loss. The first-place Gang Green, at 98-42, now lead their division by 2½ games.
Irvine used the timely hitting of Alex Brown to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Gang Green on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We're playing like gangbusters right now," said Brown.
