Irvine left fielder Will Turner was sensational. He went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Phoenix beat the Gang Green, 7-5. José Martínez notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. His record now sits at 1-0. Mike Gibson earned the save, his 1st.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Paco Pérez came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Irvine pitcher Tom Day, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Phoenix on top, 6-5.
"I had a good game," said Pérez. "Winning makes it even better."
The win brings the Firebirds to 8-17, an awful start for a team that made the playoffs just last season.
