A jubilant Doug Combs joined the postgame press conference at Tug McGraw Stadium to offer some unusual words of encouragement -- for the Chapel Hill Sharks pitching staff he had just vanquished.

"It may not have looked like it," said the Union Township Sodbusters first baseman, "but I saw some awful good pitches today. If luck hadn't been on my side it might have turned out a lot different."

That would not have been the conclusion of anyone who saw his dominant 5-for-5 hitting performance, which led to the 11-10 Sodbusters win.

"He made it look easy," said Alfredo Rangel, manager of the Sharks. "We never figured out what to do with him. Obviously."

Doug Combs hit a two-run single in the 1st, hit a two-run single in the 2nd, singled in the 5th, hit a three-run double in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

In the 2054 season Combs is hitting .294 with 17 home runs.
