Eagles Buried By Royales, 16-2
|
The Montreal Royales put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Houston Eagles in the season opener at Olympic Stadium. Third Baseman Ienobu Suzuki won plaudits for Montreal. He was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 4 times and driving in 4. Júlio Dávila picked up the win, lifting his record to 1-0 on the season. He struck out 6 and walked 1 in 6 innings, while yielding 2 runs.
Nick Baker drew 1 walk in 5 plate appearances for Montreal. The 32-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Rubén Carpena. It was his 1st RBI of the season.
"That game went belly up quickly," said losing manager Eichiro Yamamoto.
