5-Hit Blitz by Newport's Pérez
Dave Pérez was on quite a roll as he knocked the ball all over Berwick Yards, collecting 5 hits. His day of glory wasn't able to win the game, however. The Berwick Black Jacks got the 12-10 victory over the Newport News.

"I never realized that a few hits could cause so much commotion," the catcher said in the clubhouse after the game, crowded by reporters. "Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off it that we lost."

After his first couple of hits, all eyes in the ballpark were on him each time Pérez stepped into the batter's box. Even some opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little slice of league history unfold.

When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and said "relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't."

That's exactly what he did, as Pérez finished the game with 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a line in the record book. Dave Pérez singled in the 3rd, hit a three-run home run off Lázaro Egusquiza in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Ignacio Meléndez in the 7th, hit a two-run home run off Ignacio Meléndez in the 8th, hit an RBI single in the 9th and grounded out in the 11th.

Pérez's current batting average stands at .346 and he has chalked up 19 home runs and 52 RBIs.
