Charlie Downs was at the head of a North Carolina Tar Heels hit parade at Foley Field. The 19-year-old went to the plate 6 times and came away with 5 hits, but it was the Georgia Bulldogs that marched off with the 9-8 win.

"We didn't have it today," griped Tar Heels skipper Jim Spears following the game. "Charlie did fine, but as a team, we didn't do it with the bats and we didn't do it pitching."

Downs did more than fine, dominating the Bulldogs at the plate during his record-making 5-for-6 performance.

"Each time I went to the plate, I was thinking about hitting the ball hard somewhere," the sweet-swinging first baseman told reporters. "When I focus on that, I usually have quality at-bats."

Charlie Downs singled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off Leo Harris in the 8th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.

On the year, Downs is hitting .381 with 16 hits, 3 home runs, 10 RBIs, .447 OBP and has scored 7 runs.
