3 Bombs for Sam Rice Friday, July 28th , 2051 Hartford Darth Whalers third baseman Sam Rice put on a dazzling display of power today at Augusta-Richmond Grounds against the Germantown Red Devils. In the 9-3 Darth Whalers victory Rice penned his name into the record books, slamming a trio of home runs in one of baseball's finest single-day efforts. "He can hit them out anywhere, right, center, left, it doesn't matter," Germantown manager Kunihiko Daikawa said. "He's super strong and stays on the ball so well." Along with his three home runs, the 17-year-old had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. "Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off," Rice said after the game, when asked about his hitting philosophy. "The right pitch will come, and when it does, be prepared to run the bases. Or trot around them, like I did today." Sam Rice hit a two-run home run off Roy Jackson in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Roy Jackson in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Dimião Lancastre in the 5th, walked in the 7th and struck out in the 8th. Rice is hitting .250 so far this season with 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He has 18 hits including 6 home runs, 6 walks and .304 OBP. |
